Maintaining strength + cardio + flexibility after treatment
I’ll be getting active for 31 minutes a day for 31 days to motivate myself, and others, to maintain strength, cardio and flexibility training after treatment.Cancer treatments can affect bone density, heart health, mental health, energy levels, cognitive function... and outcomes in all these areas (and many more) are significantly improved by getting active. Regular exercise can also decrease cancer recurrence. Plus, of all the treatments available, exercise has the lowest side effects and perhaps the greatest rewards.
I participated in the exercise medicine program at Lift Cancer Care Services in SA during my treatment and the Lift team helped me thrive with strength and good humour through a tough year of treatment. Now, several years later, it has been a bit too easy to make excuses and fall out of the habit.
This May, inspired by this fab campaign, I'm committing to resetting and building a new foundation of strength, cardio fitness and flexibility. Total bonus if I can raise some funds along the way too!
Note: The activity tracker only allows entries for ride/walk/run/swim, so most of my entries will say 'Other.' Here's what I'll actually be doing at a minimum, with strength work at the awesome Mu|Fu Fit:
MON: Strength (upper)
TUES: Cycle (intervals)
WED: Strength (full body)
THU: Cycle (hills)
FRI: Strength (lower)
SAT: Cycle (endurance)
SUN: Yoga, stretching or pilates
