I’m getting active this May to say one thing: F Cancer. F it in its stupid face.

I’ll be getting active for 31 minutes a day (minimum!) to raise funds for everyone we know and love impacted by cancer.

For me, that's quite a few members of my family. My dad died in 2022 from complications from oesophageal cancer and had also been treated for prostate cancer, my auntie Ray died in 2025 with pancreatic cancer,
another auntie is heading in to palliative care from lung cancer, one uncle now sports a stoma bag from bowel cancer, another uncle needed preventative surgery for oesophageal cancer, and a good friend of my mum we lost to breast cancer, and a sister in law was treated for it as well.

And then, there's me personally.

In 2006 I had some funky IBS happenings and a colonoscopy revealed 2 polyps. They were removed with 'no need for follow-up' because we didn't know what they were.
In 2016 those funky IBS happenings were still happening and I was still looking for an answer. A review of the results from 2006 and a further colonoscopy discovered I have a condition called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and I have had probably close to 40 polyps removed by this point, pretty much all of them testing as one of two different types of cancer, both aggressive.
At the end of 2023 I had a subtotal hemicolectomy removing the right ascending and transverse sections of my large bowel, over 2/3rds of that entire organ where most of the polyps were occurring... because one of those polyps was on its way to firing off and taking me with it.
My story is a *very* lucky one.

While I am kicking along with a text-book recovery 2 years later (albeit with polyps now popping up in the remaining bowel), it's not without its challenges, and as this is a familial condition we've discovered my sister has it, 2 uncles have it, and our kids will need to be screened as well as they get older.

By donating to my challenge, you’ll help fund world-class cancer research, prevention programs, and support services at Cancer Council, to support people affected by cancer before, during and after treatment.

Every step, every workout, every dollar raised helps us say F Cancer louder than words.

Please support my challenge and donate today.

P.S - You'll notice most of my workouts are listed as 'other'. My workout of choice is picking up bits of heavy metal and putting them back down again, an option strangely missing for a fitness challenge.
