F Cancer Fitness Challenge

My Activity Tracking

1,126
mins

My target 960mins

31 mins x 31 days

I’m getting active this May to say one thing: F Cancer.

Too many people are impacted by cancer of all different types, whether you are fighting it yourself or are in recovery, remission or cured, whether you know of someone who has had or has it, are going through testing of some sort, or whether it’s previously hit or if it is currently hitting close to home.

Devastatingly we lost Dad last October to this horrid horrid illness and we won’t be the same without him.  If raising any funds at all helps one person in the slightest I’m going to do what I can, whether it’s through research or support services to help those affected by cancer before, during and after treatment.

This May I will be joining in on a new challenge.   The Australian Cancer Council’s 31-day fitness challenge.    The goal is to get active for 31 minutes for each of the 31 days in May. Making Every step, every rep, every move scream right back in the face of cancer. That's how we say F* cancer.

Feel free to join me in the challenge yourself either as a fitness challenge for 1 or right up to the 31 days, as support, or to register yourself to raise money for the Australian cancer council or donate to my fundraising page, donations of $2 and over are tax deductible in Australia, Or just follow along with my journey to motivate me along the way. This way we can together say F* cancer without the pressure on any budget

Cancer affects almost 1 in 2 Australians by the age of 85. It could be our mums, dads, grandparents, siblings, friends or teammates. When I say F Cancer, it’s personal.

By donating to my challenge, you’ll help fund world-class cancer research, prevention programs, and support services at Cancer Council, to support people affected by cancer before, during and after treatment.

Every step, every workout, every dollar raised helps us say F Cancer louder than words.

Please support my challenge and donate today.

My Updates

Day 31 - XL Athletic - 37 mins

Sunday 31st May
The last day of May, the F Cancer challenge minutes are done and dusted.  Finishing up May at the gym this morning with an Athletic class session.  I’m more than grateful for the encouragement, company and sponsorship in this challenge.  It continued to push me through even on the very low energy days.  Waiting for the Iron transfusion finally coming around this week for me is nothing on what people go through waiting for diagnosis or treatment,  anything to help them and their loved ones goes a long way.

Day 30 - Walk by the water edge - 35mins

Saturday 30th May
Today has been a bit more of a struggle, not sure if it’s been started from something, mentally, energy wise or physically that has created a bit of a rut today and needing dad a little more, a hug from him or a quick walk together seemed to helped these times.  I took a moment to go for a walk down the water edge this afternoon and have a couple of minute diverting down to the beach to continue my walk there on the way back to the car.   F Cancer, I physically needed my dad that little bit more today, but even though his shadow was no longer by my side as it used to be on the beach, I know I have him with me.

Tomorrow is the last day of the challenge, I will be pushing hard to take this challenge out strong.

Day 29 - XL Athletic -36 minutes

Friday 29th May
After napping way too much today from lack of energy I had a little energy in the tank to hit my gyms Friday afternoon session of athletic to complete my challenge minutes.   Ross had a session set up for the 4 of us in class today with balanced out exercises that I’m sure my body will remind me tomorrow of muscles I’ve been neglecting in training lately… especially because Copenhagen planks were added in the circuit today..

Only this weekend to go of the challenge finishing up on Sunday.   A continued thank you to those supporting me along the way, whether it be emotionally, physically setting up sessions or joining me along the way, or financially with your donations. Every cent counts, plus anything above $2 is Australian tax deductible 😉

Day 28 - PT Cardio and Tabata - 45mins

Thursday 28th May
Wenonah was great enough to run a short sharp session for Bec, Emma, Susanne and myself tonight at the gym after work.  Running on both the  treadmill and curved treadmill for our sets of Reps had our heart rates going before moving on to Tabatas of squat pulses, lunge pulses and core exercises… which I’m really good at expressing my lack of enjoyment as I count down those final seconds of each rep at the moment the muscles begin to burn…until it’s finished and I love it again. So grateful to have friends who support me through these sessions.

Day 27 - Dancing - 34mins

Wednesday 27th May
Something completely different this afternoon, I put on another Les Mills session and decided to see what one of the dance classes was like.  A couple of enjoyable and easier dances and some .... not so much…. I was doing pretty well within my own ability until the wifi started glitching towards the end of the session .  I still managed to get 34 mins of the 42 minute class completed before it stalled in casting to the tv.   Perfect way to get the minutes in while dinner was cooking in the oven and the washing was in the machine.   Only 4 days worth of sessions of the challenge to go 😁

Day 26 - Cardio and Strength 58mins

Tuesday 26th May
Cardio and Strength session at the gym tonight with Bec and Emma by my side , I was hoping to get a bit more running in but my body was rejecting that idea more than I wanted it to so it was a few stints of jogging amongst walking on the treadmill before moving on to the machines to do some strength training.

I’m blown away with the donated money jumping even higher.  Thank you again to everyone who has donated and to those who have been keeping me going with company or encouragement on those lower energy days xx

Day 25 - Walking Blocks - 36mins

Monday 25th May
Thank you thank you thank you.  So far with your help I have been able to raise $509 with a week to go of the challenge.

Tonight minutes was completed by walking around some street blocks after work and before settling back at home for the evening.   I also gained more garden ideas for my own yard while on my walk tonight.

Day 24 - Great Train Race - 32mins

Sunday 24th May
I participated in the Great train race this morning with the lovely Susanne, Emma, Bec and Tony.  With warm up exercises and my race time I was able to get the 31 minutes completed.  A couple of close calls to rolling ankles and fighting against the currently low ferritin levels still, but still relatively happy with how I went.

So excited to match the new $400 goal and pass it… I wonder if I can get to raising the $500 after all with only $46 to go 🤔😉

Day 23 - Yoga - 46mins

Saturday 23rd May
I’m so grateful for the donations that allowed me to not only reach my goal but go above it.  As much as I would love to eventually get to $500, after the last couple of donations, I’ve been cheeky enough to raise my current goal to $400… $393 is too close to not to change it.

Tonight’s exercise, I took advantage of my online Les mills membership and clicked into a yoga class.  It was a “low” intensity workout but completing the stretches and concentrating on the right breathing isn’t as easy as it looks.  Setting up for the session, the cats were a bit too keen to test out the mat suddenly appearing on the floor and throughout the session they turned it into spontaneously timed Cat Yoga, and decided to spice up my balancing skills or were ready to break my fall 🤪.   Luckily my balance tonight was strong enough and didn’t make them use up any of their “9” lives.

Day 22 - Walk and Talk - 37mins

Friday 22nd May
Perfect opportunity to catch up with a great friend today while we both had a quick space of time available. Grabbing a takeaway coffee,  Gem offered to be my walking buddy to get my minutes in.  We both had some time in the fresh air, while being able to have a good talk to check in with each other and have a laugh together.

I have included on the picture what some of the donation amounts can do in this fundraiser and where as a collective this all makes a difference

Day 21 - Gym Session -49mins

Thursday 21st May
Back to the Gym tonight, Wenonah set us a session on the whiteboard to fit in with all our varying times of availability. I started on the treadmill walking for 15 mins as a warm up, before making my way through each exercise.  Choosing the assault bike as the first block of cardio had my heart rate raised for the start of the other exercises.  The extra “Work Hard” picture drawn onto the board from an extra little trainer made me smile and encouraged to push that little harder on the bike.

Day 20 - Glebe Garden Walk - 32mins

Wednesday 20th May
Day out with mum today and a perfect spot to take a walk around Glebe gardens.  Walking around the grounds in the fresh air was a perfect way to spend the morning before grabbing a couple of plants from the shop to bring home. I’m sure Dad would approve of the choices today, he always liked walking around the grounds here too.

Day 19 - Gym workout - 34 mins

Tuesday 19th May
Back to the gym for a workout for the minutes tonight, moving between the treadmill, bike and rower.  Feeling very limited with energy before starting, and I’m disappointed I couldn’t push for a harder cardio hit, but anything is better than nothing and I’m fully committed to this challenge. I thank Emma and Bec for keeping me company while they were completing their own workouts tonight.

Day 18 - Don Reserve Walk - 35mins

Monday 18th May
First day of my leave today and I was able to get some much needed appointments sorted, possibly allowing me some headway to be on the right track to fix my energy levels.  Unfortunately tonight I still had to change things from a more energetic session at the gym, to a slow stroll walk down at the reserve…. but on the plus side there, I had multiple dogs to say hello to on the walking track, and the fresh air was nice while having time to relax and clear my mind.

Day 17 - XL Athletic - 37mins

Sunday 17th May
Was able to knock over a gym class this morning, back to XL Athletic set up by Ross.  Started the session with my favourite of Military Press lifts. The minutes are collecting together nicely for the month

Day 16 - Backyard walk and ride laps - 33mins

Saturday 16th May
While tea was cooking I completed my exercise minutes in the backyard again this afternoon.  This time walking, jogging and riding laps.   Anyone who knows about my last riding attempt knows it was a safer option for me to learn the brake controls on this bike in the backyard before riding it too far from home 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

Day 15 - Bluff and Foreshore walk - 35

Friday 15th May
Change of plans for today’s session, sometimes you just have to listen to what your body is telling you.  Tonight after work instead of one of my favourite gym classes I swapped it up for a walk by the water. The crispness to the air and the changing of the light while listening to some slower tunes was a good way to kick start my week off work while still putting my challenge minutes in the rotation.

Day 14 - Treadmill Jogging - 31mins

Thursday 14th May
Back on the treadmill tonight before the my lovely gym buddies finished work.  I managed to keep a steady pace tonight, telling myself I had to keep going until Susanne, Emma and Bec turned up for our session.  They got to hear me for the last kilometre talking to myself between the comments “I’m not liking this” “I can do this” “can’t give up now” then counting down the last minutes and 30 second blocks.  Any bit of laughter between us all keeping me going.   Once I completely my “31 minutes” and my treadmill goal tonight, I joined in for a bit with some other areas of circuit training as bonus minutes and stretches, before turning to the role of entertainment and “coaching” cheering the others on loudly as time keeper.

Day 13 - Hooping / Skipping - 32mins

Wednesday 13th May
Day 13 has rolled around, and my body has not wanted to give me a lot of energy today.  After work, I needed to do some jobs at home so it was backyard exercises again while tea was cooking and the washing was in the machine.   I started with some hula hooping and then switched it up to skipping and wall sits in between as rest spots.   Finished the last part of the session with crunch and ankle taps. Planning to be back at the gym for tomorrow’s session.

Day 12 - Gym Workout - 34mins

Tuesday 12th May
Wow what a night last night was for donations, thank you again to everyone who has donated so far. My first initial goal has been smashed with raising $310 so far.  It definitely was an extra push to keep the energy going for tonight’s session.

After work today it was time to hit up the gym with Emma and Bec for our Tuesday night session.  I started tonight’s session with a 13 minute run on the treadmill before my knee and ankle were telling me off with warning I needed to change things up.. so I decided to raise the incline to 12% and continued at a steady faster walk for the next 12 mins.  Next a minute of sit-ups before finishing up the remaining time on the rower… anyone who knows me at the gym, can confirm I potentially have quite resentful feelings towards the rowing machine…

Day 11 - Miandetta Walk - 32.27 minutes

Monday 11th May
Not a huge amount of energy after work tonight but I was still able to take a bit of time to have a walk around Miandetta this afternoon before heading home.

Day 10 - XL Athletic - 38.06 mins

Sunday 10th May
What a session! Ross definitely had us working hard at our Sunday Athletic class today. We knew what type of session we were in for this morning, walking in to see the banded run station straight up.   Seeing the Sled Push and Military Press stations made up for having  Burpees and Bulgarian Split squats being added into the rotation.   Have to admit, I absolutely loved the session today.  Was great to have Wenonah, Susanne, Dami and Liz by my side through the circuit today too.

Day 9 - Bluff and Lighthouse walk -31.24 mins

Saturday 9th May
This afternoon’s 31 minutes was an emotional one, this one made me internally scream F Cancer while wanting to scream it out loud.  It was the bluff and lighthouse walk today, this stretch has deep meaning and a lot of memories attached to it.  As a child, Dad and I used to cross the rocks to watch the water crash, this continued through to adulthood.   As Dad became unwell the walks stayed on the path more and became slower.  We had more time sitting and watching the waves and coastline,  then with the aid of a wheelchair on the really hard days. It was a great way to get out of the house for small breaks.

This was the first time I headed along that section of path and up to the lighthouse since our last outing in October. Dad really loved it here, often stating “If I was on holiday I would visit here everyday, I really should come down more with it being so close”.

I hate cancer for taking him away too soon, though he fought and beat the odds for so long to give us that final year.
I am so lucky that I have had the most amazing memories with having such a great man in my life.

Day 8 - XL Athletic - 40.42 minutes

Friday 8th May
My Friday afternoon gym class has rolled around for another week, I love the work shifts that allow me to get to this one.   I find it the perfect way to finish the work week and begin the wind down for the weekend.
I had a chance to have a talk with Faith and Susanne before the season started and then we were into the warm up to kick off the class.  Jess set up a great session  for us today with a range of different exercises.  Back when I was first starting out at the gym I was told I “would learn to love the assault bike” when I used to threaten to dismantle it, truth is I actually quite like it now.   … in small doses.  The Sled Push and Military Press exercises are still in my favourites and were both included this afternoon.

Day 7 - PT Group Session -34 minutes

Thursday 7th May
Back to the gym after work tonight, adding a few things together to complete the 31 minute quota, I started with a warm up on the treadmill while I was waiting for the others to finish work before our PT Session, 1km down and then seeing my tracking hadn’t registered fully on the workout timer on my watch.
The PT session was a “Quick and Sharp” Session and Wenonah had Bec, Emma and myself working hard on interval sprints on the curved treadmill and assault bike.  It may of been a quick session… (it didn’t feel it at the time) but it definitely was a good one.

Day 6 - Backyard Soccer - 31.49 seconds

Wednesday 6th May
After a work and before attending a meeting tonight, I was planning on going for a jog or walk at one of the local tracks but saw some home jobs staring at me that needed doing too.   Setting up an activity in the backyard gave me the time to get a load of washing in the machine and In the dryer while allowing the cats to be out in the run outside.

Today was backyard soccer, and I didn’t enjoy it at all 🤣.   But during it I did learn some new things about my L shaped yard… even though it’s only a small unit, the 31 one minutes allowed me to do over 2km worth of loops.  My yard has more of a hill on one side than I thought.  The ground is uneven drastically.  My grass needs mowing.

In other news I have more control kicking a ball with my right foot, my neighbours could of had a laugh if they happened to see the random woman running laps and I was considering how I was going to explain the potential rolled ankles.

Soccer is much more entertaining to watch on the side of a field or on the tv.

Day 5 - Treadmill jogging -31.01 mins

Tuesday 5th May
Back to the gym for tonights session, what I initially believed was to be only a warm up on the treadmill before moving to different machines became a full jog session on the treadmill.   I usually prefer quick shorter minute sprints for cardio on the treadmill but I’m learning the slow and steady approx to get the distance with non stop jogging. This has become a new thing that I’m starting to achieve.  I want to thank Emma and Bec tonight for encouraging me the whole time, keeping me at pace and my distance goal, while they did their own session.

Day 4 - Totem Tennis / Shadow Boxing- 31.09 minutes

Monday 4th May
Again Rain or Shine… or the beginning of lightning.. after a day of work today and some more factors to consider, I was creative with my time to add the 31mins of exercise today.   Washing in the machine, cooking in the oven .. headphones on.. backyard Totem tennis was the go.  As the clouds rolled in I judged the time knowing it was going to catch me.. the drizzle turned to rain, then much harder rain I continued to add squats or dance between the hits, the coldness of the rain being a refreshing cleanse of the day and an extra release of the anxious energy that has been wanting to build up in my body.

With the first 20mins becoming soaked and wondering if that was lightning I heard I was committed to finish the full 31 minutes…as time went on what became “was that lightning” was confirmed as “yep definitely lightning”… probably not the smartest standing next to a metal pole in a electrical storm.  I headed inside and finished  today’s session with squats and shadow boxing.

Day 3 - Walk at the foreshore - 38.32 minutes

Sunday 3rd May
Sundays usually include a session of Athletic at the gym but today it was switched to an afternoon walk around the foreshore.
Rain or shine and no matter what my body is deciding to do each day, I am committed to this challenge.

Anyone going through diagnosis and treatment gets hits from more angles than just health.  Travelling for treatment and accomodation costs can take its toll financially as well as mentally. Especially if it’s spending lengths of time away from the comfort of home and family.   The cancer council helps to relieve some of this, as well as supporting education and training for prevention and cures through research and campaigns.

Day 2 - Walk at Don Reserve - 37.14 mins

Saturday 2nd May
Some aches and pains changing things up this morning from stopping me rebooking back into Sprint and cancelling out of the Balance class at the gym, instead taking a 3.5km stroll down at the Don Reserve.
I saw a couple of little birds that Dad would have loved today which made me smile and take a moment.

Day 1 - XL Athletic - 33.11mins

Saturday 2nd May
Today I start the F Cancer Challenge of 31 minutes of exercise for the 31 days off May.  I wish to thank the people who have donated before the challenge had begun as well as those cheering me on or standing beside as I complete this next challenge.
