This June, Kiara is leading the way as we take on the Cancer Council’s 50km Dog Walk for Cancer challenge.

Every kilometre Kiara and I walk is for everyone who has heard, or will hear, the words, “You have cancer.” Even now, I get emotional thinking back to the day I heard those words myself. I stayed positive, stayed strong, and was determined to #BeatTheMonster.

Kiara came into my life a year ago, right in the middle of my cancer journey, just before my fourth cycle of chemotherapy. She had a big role to play in helping me get through it all, and she didn’t disappoint. Even though she was just a puppy with so much to learn, she was there on my darkest days and somehow always seemed to know when I needed her most.

Together, we found the perfect balance between being couch potatoes when rest was needed and getting outside for walks, puppy training, and fresh air around the yard when we needed to move our bodies.

Six months ago, I received the incredible news that I had beaten the monster. Without the Cancer Council’s ongoing research, support services, and grants to cancer centres such as Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, that may not have been possible.

When this challenge appeared in my feed, I knew straight away that I wanted to be involved. I knew I had to take it on with my girl, supporting a cause that means so much to me.
