Cancer has touched the lives of many people around me in recent years, in ways both close and far. It’s a word that carries weight, and one that affects far too many families and individuals.
In 2020, Dad had cancer found on his kidney. He underwent robotic surgery to remove it, and we were incredibly grateful for the outcome at the time. However, in May 2022, Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 follicular lymphoma.
Since then, it’s been regular scans and ongoing monitoring. After a period of monitoring, a PET scan in 2024 showed fast-growing lesions, and Dad commenced chemotherapy in September 2024. He completed six rounds, each three weeks apart, finishing in January 2025.
Chemotherapy changes everything — not just for the person going through it, but for everyone around them. It’s not just the physical toll — it’s the exhaustion, the uncertainty, and the way it quietly reshapes everyday life. Dad got through it with incredible strength, even on the days he didn’t feel strong at all.
He is now on a course of immunotherapy, which began in March 2025. Dad has described it as a game changer for him in managing his condition for the time being.
Follicular lymphoma is not considered curable, but it is treatable and manageable, and for that we are very grateful. Dad often describes himself as one of the lucky ones — and in many ways he is — but we also know that there are so many others facing cancer in far more aggressive and devastating forms, including people I know right now going through chemotherapy and their own battles, and others who have recently lost theirs.
In June, Whiskey and I will be walking 50km for the Cancer Council. Every kilometre we walk is for everyone who has heard, or will hear, the words “you have cancer”. And every dollar raised will help fund life-saving cancer research, prevention programs, and essential support services for people impacted by cancer.
I’m walking for others I know who have recently had their own experiences with cancer, as well as to honour my Dad, and to support everyone affected by cancer — patients, families, and friends carrying the weight of it every day. It’s for those in treatment, those newly diagnosed, those in remission, and those we’ve lost.
Mostly, I’m walking because cancer has become part of our reality in a way that makes it impossible to ignore. This is my way of doing something — however small — to contribute to the support, care, and hope that people need when facing it
