Every Step for a Reason

This June, my Dalmatian and I are taking on Cancer Council’s 50km Dog Walk for Cancer research and support services challenge. However, I have decided to push myself further and walk 100km.

Cancer has impacted my life in more ways than I can count. My family has experienced a lot of loss and heartbreak because of cancer, and I’ve also had several close friends face battles that no one should ever have to go through due to this horrible disease. Watching people you love suffer, and seeing the effect that cancer has on not only the patient going through the battle but their family members as well, changes you forever.

That’s why I am embarking on this challenge, because it means so much to me, having experienced the impact of cancer so closely in my life.

My sister also works at the forefront of cancer research, and through her I’ve seen just how important this work is. She’s dedicated to helping fight a disease that takes far too many lives, but I’ve also seen the reality of how difficult progress can be. Even life-saving research is often limited by funding, because everything costs money.

She’s shown me how even small donations can make a real difference,  helping fund research that leads to better treatment responses, improved prognosis, higher overall survival rates, and ultimately stronger progress in fighting and beating this disease.

Throughout June, my Dalmatian and I will be walking 100km together, every early morning, every sore step, every wag of the tail,  for the people who have fought cancer, the people still fighting, and the families carrying the weight of it every single day.

Almost 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85. Every kilometre we walk is for everyone who has heard, or will hear, the words “you have cancer.” And every dollar raised will help fund life-saving cancer research, prevention programs, and vital support services for those affected.

If you’re able to donate, no matter how big or small, it would truly mean the world to me. Even sharing this post or joining the challenge with your own dog can help make a difference.

Cancer affects all of us, and together, we can help fight back.
