58KM in October: Because Every Step Counts

This October, I’ll be running 58km for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The challenge has a deeply personal purpose to me, and is something that is incredibly important to me.

Back in 2023 my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and our entire world flipped upside down. Despite the shock, it was something she handled with so much resilience and she proved to the world just how ridiculously strong she is. Getting out there, and racking up these kilometres is my way of doing justice to the strength she shows every day, and how much she means to me.

I’m also running for a friend of mine, Beck. Seeing how she’s tackling chemo reminds me so much of that tough mentality we see in Women’s Football, a game we both watch and love.

Running 58km is a small thing, but it’s my way of showing up for my mum, and letting Beck know I’m in her corner while they both get through this.

My Updates

FOR BECK

Thursday 27th Aug

The way Beck is tackling her chemo treatment right now is honestly on another level.

If you talk to either of us, you know we share a massive passion for Women’s Football, and especially Lucy Bronze. We actually have this ongoing thing where, whenever life gets heavy or one of us is dealing with some sort of hardship, we just remind each other to "tackle it like Lucy Bronze." It's our way of saying put your head down, be relentless, and not let anything beat you.

Recently, we went and saw Chelsea Women train and play in the Sydney, and to see that sort of mentality up close meant a lot to the both of us. It was something special, especially during this difficult time.

It’s amazing to see Beck take on that same mentality, and absolutely smash through chemo, and I want to do the same thing by smashing this challenge.

FOR MUM

Thursday 27th Aug

My mum isn’t someone who makes a big fuss or demands the spotlight to be on her, she’s the complete opposite. She’s the kind of person who just quietly puts her head down, and gets on with things, no matter how difficult life gets. When things are tough, she doesn’t complain or look for sympathy, she just handles the situation with so much determination. She’s without a doubt, one of the strongest individuals I know, and someone I aspire to be like one day.

The road hasn’t been easy, there have been plenty of incredibly hard, quiet moments and we have both learnt a lot of things. When things get rough, some people come along for the ride, others jump off along the way. Sometimes people surprise you, for better or worse, and that is something I’ve really thought about since her diagnosis.

My mum has set the standard of what strength looks like, and that’s what I’ll be taking with me when I take on this challenge.
