I'm doing it to support the fight against cancer.
For centuries, pilgrims have walked the Camino Frances, The Way of St. James, across northern Spain. Some carried their own sins and some the sins and internal pain of others. Today, a different pain weighs on too many lives with no regard for who you are, your ethnicity, wealth or indeed health — there is a perpetual fight against cancer.
Cancer is relentless. It takes mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, partners, and friends. It stole my wife after her valiant fight over more than five years. It takes too many, too soon and increasingly too young. But together, we can push back. We can fight for better treatments, for critical support, and for the day when no one has to hear the words, “You have cancer.”
In mid-2024, in her memory, I walked over 800 kilometres on the Camino, carrying the weight of loss but also the hope of a future free from this disease. Now I'm home I will continue to walk as much as I can — until we see real change.

Day one
Saturday 17th Aug A very undulating and scenic day one. Much harder than I remember from yesteryear. There are two routes out of St Jean Pied de Port. At least one hundred pilgrims arrived yesterday and I saw none during my day. They appear to all taken the Route Napoleon straight over the top of the Pyrenees where as my route is under and over!
