Nathan, Tom and I are cycling across Australia to support Cancer Council in their mission for a cancer free future.

Because 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, I’m putting my body to the test to raise funds and show my support.

Please sponsor us to support cancer research and provide vital services for Australians living with cancer.

Thank you for your generous donation. Together, we can free the future from cancer.

My Updates

Update one week in

Sunday 17th Aug
Hi from Merredin! We are taking a rest day in Merredin after cycling 343kms over the past six days from Perth. There were a couple of tough days at the start as we climbed through the Perth Hills, but the Heritage Rail Trail on the first day gave us the opportunity to enjoy some more car free riding as we got accustomed to riding our fully laden bikes (approx 50kg each). We also had great views of the Swan valley and some lovely national park falls and forest. Day two was challenging as we climbed from Chidlow to Toodyay with strong side/headwinds and spent about half of the day on a busy road, feeling like we were being pushed into the traffic by the wind. Days 3, 4 and 5 were much easier cycling as we rode through the Central Wheat belt of WA, stopping at some towns with great names such as Goomaling, Wyalkatchem and Trayning. Andrew was shaken by a near miss with a careless driver about 2km from Dowerin and had some stern words with the guy when we came across him outside the post office in town. This was heightened by the news Andrew had received the day before that one of his Adelaide Hills regular cycling buddies had been tragically killed after being struck by a van while out riding. Prayers and thoughts are very much with Rob's family and friends at this time. This sad and sobering news has made us even more aware of our vulnerability on the roads and we continue to carefully monitor all vehicles approaching and get off the road for trucks or when two vehicles meet from opposite directions near us. Thankfully, the roads since Dowerin have been light with traffic though and the drivers, courteous.
We chatted with many charming locals and took advice about upcoming roads and towns. We were welcomed by members of the Perth Caravanning Club who were enjoying a weekend away in the area, many giving a donation to the Cancer Council as we spent time around their campfire one evening. Day six was our biggest day in terms of distance, at 75km and was into a gentle headwind, so we felt like we really needed the rest day here. The boys seem to be getting fitter, and we realise there will be many bigger days to come....

Delayed departure

Friday 8th Aug
We haven't left Perth yet! Nathan has been unwell for the past few days since we arrived here, so we extended our stay in the accommodation we had in Mosman Park for 3 more nights, and have now moved to another Airbnb in Bayswater. Our amended departure for our cycling adventure across Australia now hoped to be Monday 11th August (Nathan is confident he will be sufficiently  recovered by then!). The delay has caused us to revise our route so that we no longer plan to spend the first 3 or 4 weeks on the Munda Biddi cycle trail to Albany (regrettably, as we were looking forward to that section as a highlight). Instead we plan to basically head due east from Perth, taking some trails and back roads until we join the Great Eastern Highway at Merredin.
While waiting for Nathan to recuperate, Andrew has had a lovely time exploring some of Perth's amazing cycle paths, and has also fitted in a trip to Rottnest Island where he delighted in the car free roads, sensational coastal scenery, and met some friendly local quokkas!
