BSSC's Do It for Cancer 2019

By Amber-Lee Donahoo

I’m doing it for cancer!

Hello, I'm ‘Doing It’ to support Cancer Council QLD on their mission to defeat cancer.

In October of 2014, my mother passed away after a five year battle with bowel cancer. In an instant, I lost my mother and best friend from my life and my four young children lost a nanna they would never get the chance to really know. It was the most difficult and devastating time of my life. An experience I would never wish on anyone else.

In 2017, I honoured her life by Doing It for Cancer at BSSC. The staff and students at BSSC banded with me and together we raised $8,236.50 for Cancer Council QLD. It was a momentous and deeply personal experience for me and a very important part of my healing process. The connection and support I felt from the BSSC community was overwhelming.

Cancer is a destructive force that impacts not only the person diagnosed but also their family and friends. Since 2017, I have heard many stories of suffering within the BSSC community from those who have been impacted by cancer, stories that make my heart ache. It is out of love for and on behalf of the BSSC community that I am back in 2019, determined to raise money and awareness for cancer research, but also passionately encouraging the message for BSSC students,  "you do not have to suffer alone, have the courage to connect!"

On the 14th of June 2019, Burpengary State Secondary College will “Do it for Cancer” and host a hair colour and shave event to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Seven brave staff members intend on shaving their hair with individual targets. My target is $1,000 and if that is achieved, I will be shaving my head completely.

In the words of Dr Seuss, “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” Please connect with me and support this cause by sponsoring me and the BSSC community, every dollar raised does make a big difference!

Thank you to my Supporters
