I’m doing it for cancer!
I’m challenging myself to support Cancer Council in their mission for a cancer free future.
Breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in Australia and the most common cancer among females. Around 1,000 women aged under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, equivalent to about 3 young women each day.
I never thought I would find myself in this statistic, but on the 16th of April this year I was diagnosed with Her2+ breast cancer.
For the past 4 months I have been living in a whirlwind of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and surgery, and I am only about two thirds of the way through my journey. Side note - I hate referring to this as a journey. A journey is fun and something you look forward to. This is a nightmare, but there is really no other word to describe it.
Through this time all I keep thinking about is how I can make other young people aware that unfortunately we are not invincible. If it doesn’t happen to you, statistics point to it happening to someone you love. Far too many young people are being diagnosed with cancer, more than ever before, and unfortunately the age for screening has still not come down. I urge you to be your own advocates, do checks on yourself and go to your doctor if something just doesn’t feel right.
I have chosen to do 50 squats a day for cancer through the month of September. I will never feel like I am doing enough, but if I can raise even a little bit of money for the Cancer Council it will be an achievement.
