Steve's SA Five 50 ultra series run in memory of Murray Burdett

By Steve Burdett

I’m doing it for cancer!

I had an idea that became the SA Five 50 ultra series in 2019.  Each year since a group of runners have pushed themselves to finish the five ultra-marathons across SA, and this year I'll be joining them on the trails to raise money for cancer research in memory of my Dad, who passed away in October 2023.

Everyone that met Murray Burdett would agree he was a truly wonderful person.  He was a school teacher, then country high school principal and volunteered for local community groups.  In retirement Dad continued with volunteering and spent lots of time helping the local migrant community, particularly with vineyard contractors in setting up their business endeavors.

Mum and Dad held many tennis club and teacher social events at our tennis court in Suttontown.   You could always find Dad at the center of a group of keen listeners telling a story, usually with a big laugh at the end.

Dad stayed active and positive during his battle with cancer, despite all the surgeries and chemotherapy.  He caught up with as many old and new friends as he could, and there was a constant stream of visitors in his final weeks.   We miss him dearly.

1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, I’m raising funds to show my support.

Please sponsor me to support cancer research and provide vital services for Australians living with cancer.

Thank you for your generous donation. Together, we can free the future from cancer.

Please join my team and do your own fundraising, particularly if you're a Five 50s or Five 20 runner!

My Updates

2024 SA Five 50 ultra series done!

Wednesday 16th Oct
This was always going to be an emotional day, being exactly one year since Dad died.  But I came across plenty of friends along the run, as with the other four ultras this year, either running or cheering us on at aid stations.

I actually ran quite well - felt much better than the four other ultras in the series. Ended up 14th of 103 finishers.  I guess those four big training runs paid off!

Thanks to everyone that made a donation!

3 weeks to go!

Monday 30th Sep
My 3rd Yurrebilla was by far the slowest, but done with plenty of smiles.  Even Orchard track wasn't so bad!  I took the first half at a nice relaxed pace, which I'm learning is more relaxed than the fitter and overly enthusiastic versions of me in 2015 and 2018.  Had good chats to new and old friends, ate very well, and no injury issues!

Past halfway!

Saturday 17th Aug
I started Federation Ultra-Trail at Monarto Zoo with sore legs.  A week earlier I decided to run Mt Crawford 24km hard.  Sounds stupid in hindsight, but at the time I figured a hard 24km followed by a 55km ultra a week later would really strengthen the legs for the rest of the year.  Won't be doing that again!

I got through the race ok, but it was a struggle toward the end.  I'd run most of the race with Joel, until I left an aid station a bit earlier and he only reappeared maybe 10km later.  We both then limped the last 6km home.

Great day out though with a nice mix of winding single track and easy gravel roads.  probably my favourite of the courses I've run here over the years.

3 down, 2 to go!

2 down, 3 to go!

Saturday 22nd Jun
Tower Trail run is always a great trip away.  I've run the 21km race the last couple of years, and did the ultra back in 2019.  This is where I ran 6:00:02 and kept being given "2 seconds" as the name on my bib for many TRSA events following.

I stayed with Heather, Kate, Joel, Mandy & Letty, and were joined by Jesse and Bianca for a few adventures.  Pre and post run dinners were great with 30 people or so at each.

I'm not as fit as I was in 2019! Ran out conservatively but realised in lap 3 that conservatively was actually too fast!  ITB played up but I managed to hobble through in 7:06:28.  Great fun event!

Race 1 done!

Tuesday 7th May
Beautiful day on the trails yesterday for Five Peaks 58km. Joel and I set off at a relatively leisurely pace compared to past efforts, and continued to slow down from there! Lack of training was mentioned a few times!
Such a great day out with support from lots of people on course, particularly Mandy and Letty and Camilo.  Great to catch up with many trail friends on course and at the finish. The highlight for me was running through my disco tunnel as a competitor for the first time!
Thanks so much for all the generous donations so far.
